Akashic, an independent book publisher “dedicated to publishing urban literary fiction and political nonfiction,” is set to host a couple rad sounding events this month in Brooklyn and Manhattan:
The first is a book party for Akashic authors Cristina Garcia, James Greer, Bernice L. McFadden, Arthur Nersesian and Joseph Mattson (hosted by Melvin Van Peebles and Johnny Temple), to be held at the Center for Fiction on May 19th. Whew! That sounds amazing.

The next night (happy deathday, Christopher Columbus!) head back down to Brooklyn for a poetry reading featuring Amiri Baraka, Bernice L. McFadden, Cristina Garcia and Achy Obejas. Once again, WHEW! I’ll see you there.
